Six Month Smiles vs. Invisalign

May 26, 2011 @ 06:53 AM – by Edward Shukovsky

In today's dental world a 'smile makeover' is a reality.  I call these two techniques "Secret Braces."  Both Six Month Smiles and Invisalign are orthodontic in nature, they move the teeth.  Each will close spaces or reduce crowding.  Invisalign is a clear aligner technique in which the patient changes a clear, thin retainer every two weeks. The aligner exerts a very slight pressure inorder to move the teeth in the desired direction.  Treatment times vary but average about ten months.  Six Month Smiles is a light wire technique that, well, takes about six months!  It is for adults.  Clear brackets are placed on the teeth and a light wire is used to put slight pressure on the teeth to move them in place.  Both techniques are excellent. The decision to go with Six Month Smiles or Invisalign is based on the nature of what needs to be accomplished, the time frame and the patient's preference.

Have You Thought About Creating A New Smile

Mar 6, 2011 @ 03:17 PM – by Edward Shukovsky

In the 21st century a dentist wears many hats.  We check for oral cancer.  We can move teeth.  We can save teeth from decay, trauma and gum problems.  We can help a patient discover and treat, through an oral appliance, sleep apnea.  We can safely sedate a patient that is fearful.  But one thing that is often overlooked is the degree to which we can change the smile of a patient that is not happy with his or her smile.  Two recent cases that we have treated stand out as great examples of our work in this office.  In the first, a patient that has been a patient for over twenty-five years, chose to have four veneers on her front teeth.  In the second, a man who was never happy with his smile underwent orthodontics for two years and then had us reconstruct his entire mouth.  What do these cases have in common?  Trust.

Modern Dentistry's Many Faces

Jan 14, 2011 @ 06:35 AM – by Edward Shukovsky

In today's world of high tech, it is easy to lose sight of all the things that a modern dentist can do.  Thirty years ago a 'modern' dentist did not have the equipment, techniques or materials that are now readily available.  The number of services that can be performed in a dental office is so different than it once was that most patients are totally unaware of the revolution in dental care.
