Get to Know Dr. Shukovsky

When selecting a cosmetic dentist, it is crucial to conduct thorough research. In addition to verifying the dentist’s skill and experience, you should seek someone you feel comfortable with and can trust. To aid you in your pursuit, here is some information about Dr. Shukovsky that can help you get to know him a bit better:

What inspired you to become a cosmetic dentist?

From the start, I enjoyed enhancing a patient’s smile. As one of my patient’s said recently, ”Your smile is your ‘front door.’” Many of the things we do change the way patients view themselves, often improving self-esteem. It is amazing to see. Sometimes it is something simple, and sometimes it involves a full mouth reconstruction, but I have found I enjoy it all. I am in the “people business,” and helping them smile has always been a priority for me.

What do you love most about being a cosmetic dentist?

Today we have so many tools in the toolbox. Whitening, bonding, veneers, ceramics, implants, digital radiography, laser dentistry… the list goes on. With all these tools, the patient has options. Do they want a bridge or a single implant to replace a missing tooth? The patient benefits by the state-of-the art care that we provide.

What distinguishes you from other cosmetic dentists?

I trained with true clinicians who loved teaching. The University of Pennsylvania gave me an excellent foundation. But education does not stop with school. Isn’t that why we call it the “practice” of medicine and dentistry? I then took a series of courses with David Hornbrook that changed my life. Comprehensive dentistry took on a new meaning and I was then able to provide a higher level of care to my patients—offering the latest in materials and techniques that required this advanced training.

Are there particular accomplishments or patient cases you are especially proud of?

A 50-year-old gentleman came into our office, having never met me. His dental needs and wants were enormous. But most importantly, I was amazed he could chew, given the amount of extensive wear of his teeth. He claimed he chewed just fine. We ended the consultation, and he said he would let me know if he wanted to go forward with the full mouth reconstruction. He called a week later and came in and told me I was correct; chewing food was difficult for him. He had been embarrassed to admit he had difficulty chewing. Post-reconstruction, he looks fantastic (years younger!), and with his restored bite, he can eat anything. Life-changing!

Do you have a favorite cosmetic dentistry treatment you like to perform?

No, I don’t. I enjoy my patients. It could be for a routine hygiene appointment all the way to a multiple implant reconstruction—it is about the patient; not the procedure. I enjoy whatever I am doing in the moment.

What most excites you about the future of cosmetic dentistry?

This field is ever-evolving. If you told me at the time I started in dentistry that every room would have a computer, that X-rays would be on a computer screen, that lasers could replace the drill or fix a gum problem, that teeth could be screwed into the jaw, etc.—I would have thought you were totally mad… crazy, right? I am amazed by the incredible amount of research on techniques and materials. All of this technology makes it easier for the patient, in terms of visualization of their problems and their solutions.
