Oral Conscious Sedation

At the cosmetic and restorative dentistry practice of Dr. Edward Shukovsky, we understand that many patients have fears or anxiety when it comes to visiting the dentist. Proper dental hygiene and routine visits to the dentist are vital to maintaining good dental health. In order to provide the most comfortable and relaxing dental experience available, Dr. Shukovsky offers oral conscious sedation dentistry at our practice.

Why Should You Consider Oral Conscious Sedation?

Many Americans choose to abstain from dental visits due to a dental phobia. Because so many dental patients today have some degree of dental phobia, Dr. Shukovsky and our staff are pleased to offer oral conscious sedation at our practice. Depending on the severity of anxiety, the sedation medication can be taken the night before the procedure, or between thirty minutes to an hour before the procedure begins. While oral conscious sedation does not provide pain relief, it does offer relief from anxiety and provides an overall feeling of relaxation. If a dental procedure will require medication for pain relief, then a local anesthetic will be administered in addition to oral conscious sedation.

If you suffer any of the following conditions, then you may be an ideal candidate for oral conscious sedation:

  • Fear or anxiety about dentists and dental visits (dental phobia)
  • Fear of needles
  • Painful or sensitive teeth
  • A bad gag reflex
  • Bad past dental experiences
  • Difficulty getting numb
  • Complex treatment requiring long dental visits
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Parkinson’s disease
