Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, affects a large number of adults. Periodontal infections can be caused by a variety of different factors, so for some patients, it may seem that regular brushing and flossing is not enough. Thankfully, my practice is fully equipped to treat these issues and help keep periodontal disease at bay. By working with OralDNA Labs (a laboratory located in Eden Prairie, Minnesota), I can now provide patients with more accurate treatment than ever before – their innovative tools allow me to analyze the various kinds of bacteria inside the patient’s mouth. With a quick oral rinse, I can see which types of bacteria are present, and determine the level of risk each pathogen poses to the patient. The results of the test enable me to identify the bacterial flora and their levels, so I can recommend proactive measures, such as a specific antibiotic regimen. The results from OralDNA Labs also allow me to select the most appropriate treatment to address these infected areas, such as laser gum therapy, which can effectively kill the harmful bacteria below the gumline and encourage growth of healthy tissue. With customized dental treatment, my patients are able to significantly improve their oral health, as well as their overall health.
In addition to the periodontal bacterial assessment, OralDNA Labs can evaluate the oral flora for OraRisk® Candida and OraRisk® HPV. The candida is a fungal infection that can be a problem for the immunocompromised patient or patients on long-term antibiotics. The OraRisk® HPV is a test that assesses the human papilloma virus in the saliva. If present, this virus increases the risk of getting a certain type of oral cancer.
OralDNA Labs does genotyping, as well. These genetic tests can show whether a patient is susceptible to periodontal disease from a genetic standpoint.
The beauty of these tests is that they’re non-invasive. A little saliva goes off to the lab and then results are back within a couple of weeks.
