What are Dental Crowns?

Porcelain dental crowns are placed over the affected tooth during a simple cosmetic dentistry procedure. After a consultation with Dr. Shukovsky to determine how best to meet a patient’s unique needs, a cast is taken of the teeth. This cast is sent to a dental laboratory, where it will be used to create custom dental crowns that are designed to fit perfectly over the affected tooth or teeth. The patient may be fitted with temporary crowns to wear until the final dental crowns are complete.

The permanent dental crowns will be placed during a second appointment. The crowns should totally encapsulate the teeth and are bonded with a dental adhesive. The entire process is typically quick and considered safe. A local anesthetic may be used to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. Your teeth may feel sensitive for a few days, but any discomfort can be relieved with simple pain medication.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns have a lot to offer. They remedy the physical pain and extreme discomfort that weak, decayed, or damaged teeth can cause. They also strengthen teeth, restoring your ability to bite and chew properly. Dental crowns are designed to look and work like natural, healthy teeth. They can dramatically improve the appearance of your smile, often boosting your self-confidence in the process. Some other benefits include:

  • Protection against further damage
  • Improved aesthetic appearance
  • Structural support for weak or damaged teeth
  • Blend in with existing teeth
  • Can serve as an attractive restoration for dental implants

Additionally, if a dental bridge is needed, porcelain crowns can be placed on one or both sides of the bridge to provide support.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Crowns?

If you have cracked, worn down, or decayed teeth, a dental crown might be a good way to restore it. In your initial consultation, Dr. Shukovsky can assess your concerns and help you determine if a dental crown is the most appropriate treatment. If the affected tooth/teeth can be preserved, a dental crown is likely the best solution for restoring and protecting it. However, if an extraction is necessary, alternative options, such as dental bridges or dental implants may be suggested. Dr. Shukovsky can thoroughly explain any and all available treatments during your appointment, and will assist you in selecting one that works best for you.
