Restorative (Reconstructive) Dentistry

Restorative dentistry, or reconstructive dentistry, is performed to repair teeth that are chipped, cracked, broken, or badly discolored, as well as to fill gaps left by missing teeth. Without treatment, these problems can prevent proper oral functioning, diminish one’s self-esteem, and cause even worse problems over time. However, through restorative dentistry, even badly damaged smiles can be fully reconstructed. The practice of Edward Shukovsky, D.M.D., is affiliated with the prestigious Utah Valley Dental Lab, creator of world-class ceramic tooth restorations.

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns – tooth-shaped shells crafted of attractive ceramic or metal materials – are an excellent solution to damaged or missing teeth. A crown can be placed either over a damaged tooth to conceal aesthetic flaws and protect it from further damage or in the gap left by a missing tooth. Crowns are frequently used to cover damaged teeth after root canal therapy, to top dental implants, and to secure dental bridges.

Placement of Dental Crowns

The placement process for dental crowns typically requires two office visits: one to prepare the tooth and a second to place the crown. The dentist begins each visit by administering a local anesthetic. In the first visit, he shaves away a small portion of the natural tooth structure to accommodate the crown. Then, he takes an impression of the teeth and mouth, which he sends to the dental laboratory that will craft the crown. Finally, he places a temporary crown, which the patient wears until the permanent version is ready (typically about a week). In the second visit, the dentist removes the temporary crown. He then places the temporary crown and bonds it in place with dental-grade cement. Finally, he assures its fit with the surrounding teeth and bite.

Full-Mouth Rehabilitation

Full-mouth rehabilitation is a dream come true for many patients whose smiles are severely marred by complex structural and aesthetic flaws. Dr. Shukovsky combines cosmetic, general, and restorative dentistry treatments as part of a comprehensive treatment plan to fully restore the smile. For example, he may replace a missing tooth with an implant-supported restoration, cover a badly damaged tooth with a dental crown, and brighten the smile with teeth whitening.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are among the most durable and natural-looking tooth-replacement options. Implants are titanium posts that are used to replace the root of a missing tooth and anchor a crown, bridge, or set of dentures directly to the jawbone. Implant-supported tooth restorations do not shift or slip, and they are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.
