Dental implants are certainly an excellent treatment option for those who need to replace missing teeth. However, not everyone is a candidate for this restorative procedure. Each patient’s case is unique, so the best way to find out if you are a good candidate for dental implants is to schedule a consultation with a dentist who is experienced in dental implant restoration, and who works with a board-certified oral surgeon and/or board-certified periodontist. Some of the qualities of an ideal dental implant candidate include:
- Healthy gums
- Non-smoker
- Adequate jaw bone density (to anchor the implant)
Some patients who do not have sufficient bone density can still receive dental implants following a bone grafting procedure, which can help rebuild bone deficiencies. Ideal candidates for dental implants are also in good health, and are not suffering from certain chronic diseases or systemic issues. Additionally, patients who are taking immuno-suppressants may not be eligible for dental implants, as these medications can often lead to implant failure. Lastly, because dental implants act like your natural teeth, remember that a commitment to good oral hygiene is crucial for success!
